One of the best ways to insure you will be eating organically grown produce is to grow it yourself with plain old dirt, seeds and water. And there is nothing more delicious than food you have grown yourself. So when animals decide to take up residence in your garden and eat your precious crops, it can be more than just a nuisance.
The best way to combat pests in the garden is to take preventative measures before the animals even get into the garden in the first place. If you haven’t thought about putting up a fence, you might want to consider it. You do not need to spend a lot of money on it either. Just a few pieces of lumber and some sturdy chicken wire could do it. Dig a trench at least 6 inches deep around the perimeter of your garden, line the fence in the trench and fill back in with dirt. This will prevent digging animals like rabbits or raccoons from getting under.
If you do not want to put up a fence, you can try making your own animal repellent using garlic, raw eggs and hot chili sauce. The combination of those three ingredients makes animal cringe (if they can cringe) and run away. Of course, if that smells makes YOU cringe, you can always try something else. Human hair clippings from the beauty salon also work if you sprinkle them throughout your garden.
Animals can sometimes do more serious damage to your garden than just eating your plants. Some animals can gnaw through your irrigation system or dig under your garden shed causing problems. If you have any serious damage to your property or home due to wild animals, give us a call to see if you should file a claim on your homeowner’s insurance policy.
