According to the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, representatives from the National Fire Protection Association, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Los Angeles County Fire Department gathered with Fire Safe Councils to network and talk about how to keep their communities safe on Monday.
Officials also talked about education, cohesive strategy updates, insurance, volunteering, and fundraising. Dave Nuss, divisions manager of the Wildland Fire Operations Division for the National Fire Protection Association, said their main goal is to help communities become fire-wise and reduce the threat of wildfires.
“It is important to get the community to accept the fact that it’s an on-going process to maintain the safety of a community when it comes to wildfires,” Nuss said. The following are provided by the Orange County Fire Authority as ways to be safe in case of a fire:
Create a Wildfire Action Plan:
- Organize meeting locations, communication plans and evacuations.
- Plan and practice several escape routes.
- Have a fire extinguisher on hand and train others how to use it.
- Be familiar with where the gas, electric and water main shut off controls are.
- Designate an emergency meeting place outside the fire hazard area.
- Assemble an emergency supply kit.
- Keep a list of emergency contact numbers near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.
- Have a portable radio or scanner to stay updated on the fire.
