The nation has been mourning the loss of several lives after a tornado ripped through Moore, Oklahoma last week demolishing homes and pummeling buildings including businesses, public buildings and even schools. Even with the most advanced storm prediction equipment available, it is hard to determine what type of destruction will happen during a storm. It is important to prepare ourselves for Mother Nature’s fury so we are ready for anything she throws at us.
It seems the earth’s weather has been changing as of late causing much more severe storms across the United States. Making our homes a little safer and setting up emergency plans can only help to bring peace of mind when a storm is in the forecast.
Start by taking a walk around your home to see what could be a possible hazard during a storm and fix it. Do you have lawn furniture that could blow around in a windstorm? Find a secure spot to put your furniture and make it accessible for the times you need to get it away in a hurry. Trim any tree branches or shrubs that could cause a problem during a storm as well. If your home is equipped with storm ready shutters, be sure they are in working condition. Or have precut plywood window covers made and stored.
You should also make an emergency kit for your home including first aid supplies, food, water and other necessary supplies your family will need if power goes out. Water is important. You should have enough for each member of your family to have 1 gallon per day for at least 3 days.
Set aside some time to talk with your family about emergencies. Have an evacuation route planned and written down. The more prepared you are now can help ease tensions and worries during a big storm. And if you have any questions about your insurance and how a storm could affect it, give us a call.
