By this time every year most people have heard the term “Flex Alert”, but what does it really mean? The Flex Alert campaign is an emergency alert program that lets Californians know it is time to conserve energy. According to flexalert.org there are 3 main things we can do to help conserve energy during these alerts:
• Turn off all unnecessary lights, computers, and appliances.
• Adjust your air conditioning thermostat to 78° or higher. Use a fan when possible
• Postpone using major appliances and equipment until after 6 p.m.
By following these 3 simple steps we can reduce the strain on the power grid and minimize the possibility of rolling black-outs. Another added benefit to taking these conservation steps is that
you will be using less power and hopefully will see a reduction in your monthly bill.
There are also several ways to help while at the office as well. Flexalert.org recommends that in addition to the steps listed above, you can adjust blinds that receive direct sunlight and turn
off any office equipment that is not currently in use.
It is important to remember that when a Flex Alert is issued we can all take little steps to make sure that the remaining days of summer stay comfortable.
