As we age, it is obvious that everyone ages right along with us. Even though we might not like the idea, our grandparents, aunts, uncles and –yes, even our parents will get old one day. It will be up to us to look after their affairs and make sure they are getting the proper care they need to live out the rest of their lives.
Before we all reach that point in our lives, we should all sit down with our older family members and discuss all the possibilities that the future may hold. There are health issues, finances, insurance, housing, and many other things that may need to be dealt with when family members get older. Discussing them now can save a lot of frustration later.
No one wants to talk about their own demise, but knowing what your family’s wishes are when it comes to their death can be very important. If your loved one were to die tomorrow, do you know if he would want to be buried or cremated? Would he want a formal funeral or a small memorial service? Finding out now can save you the heartache of having to decide those things when you are grieving.
Of course, there are many other things besides death that need to be discussed. Where are your loved ones’ insurance policies located? What doctors do they use on a regular basis? Do they take steady medication? Do they have any outstanding debts anywhere?
If you can cover all these topics while your family is willing and capable of discussing them, you will be in good shape when they are older and may not be able to communicate as freely. Be sure your loved ones know you are there for them. And remember to call us if you have any concerns about your loved ones’ insurance.
