Do your kids play on a team or just enjoy kicking a ball around the backyard with their friends? Either way, you should teach them about playing safely to avoid injuries. Being a good sport, utilizing protective gear and following the rules of the game can all help keep safe everyone involved. With the spring sports season upon us, now is a great time to brush up on all those safety rules you may have forgotten.
Of course, each sport has its own safety guidelines to follow, but generally speaking it is a good idea to always be aware of your surroundings to stay safe on the field. Playing by the rules of the game is your best bet to staying safe out there. Listen to your coaches and follow instructions to be as safe as you can be. Good sportsmanship can go a long way when it comes to safety as well.
Most sports require special safety equipment to participate in games and practices. Soccer usually requires cleats and shin guards. Baseball requires cleats, batting helmets and sometimes other protective gear as well. The only sport that doesn’t really have any requirements when it comes to gear is running. However, ALL sports require you to stay hydrated.
Keep a full water bottle with you for all practices and games. Make sure your children know that it is not good practice to only drink when you are thirsty. Frequent drink breaks can help stave off dehydration and keep your performance strong. Tell your children to take drinks at every break in both practices and games.
Most importantly, have a great time out there on the field! Whether your child enjoys organized sports or just likes pick-up games every once in a while, make sure he stays safe and hydrated by following the rules.
