Have you ever been standing at your stove sautéing some vegetables when all of a sudden your pan catches fire? If you have, you know how much of an intense few seconds that can be. It can be very scary if you do not know what you should do in those types of situations. Here are a few tips to help you put out a kitchen fire if it were to occur:
• If your pan has grease (that includes oil or butter) in it, do not put water on the fire. The water will repel the grease which will then splatter and could cause additional fires.
• Put a lid on the pan to suffocate the flame and remove it from the heat. Be sure to turn off the stove.
• If something in your oven catches fire, do not be tempted to open the oven door. Keeping the door closed will greatly reduce the oxygen and help put out the fire. Just make sure you turn off the oven.
• It’s not uncommon for a fire to start in your microwave. Treat them the same as you would an oven fire by leaving the door closed and turning off the power.
• If the fire cannot be contained, get out of your house and call the fire department. Do not take any chances.
To prevent kitchen fires, remember to always use materials that are safe for the oven, microwave or stove depending on how you will be using them. Keep all your pot handles turned inward and keep towels or other flammable objects away from the flames. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe from fires by always being cautious in the kitchen.
