According to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, IKEA activated a new solar energy system at its Covina store this week. The 57,000-square-foot solar array includes 2,002 photovoltaic panels. This will produce about 651,800 kilowatts of clean energy a year, which is enough to power 55 homes or eliminate the emissions of 88 cars.
IKEA is in the process of installing solar systems at eight additional locations in the eastern U.S. Other Southland IKEA stores that have solar systems include Burbank, Costa Mesa, and San Diego. The company contracted with Taiwan-based Gloria Solar to design, develop, and install the solar panels.
“A solar energy system will help reduce our store’s carbon footprint and represents another investment toward our future in this community,” store manager Kristien Verbeke said in a statement. “The more solar electricity we install close to the load where electricity is used, the less transmission lines we have to build, and that means California has to import less energy from other states,” she said.
