Now that summer is here, you might be thinking of taking some time off work to relax out on your boat. Before you schedule your next personal day, give your boat a good overhaul so that you can spend your day off relaxing and not fixing little problems that might occur. Having a safe boat is the most important thing when you are out to sea.
Give it a once-over and see if there are any leaks or blockages anywhere. Check the fuel tank and the battery to make sure they are full and charged properly. Check your bilge pump to make sure it is working properly. Start the engine and make sure you don’t hear any unusual pings or bangs. Have all those issues taken care of before you attempt to take her out.
How long has it been since you have checked your life jackets? You might be due for some replacements if they have been sitting out for a long period of time. Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, so your life jackets might have fraying straps or tears in the outer covering that could compromise their ability to help keep someone afloat. If your kids were small when you bought them, you might need to upgrade to some bigger sizes too.
If you have not looked at your boat insurance policy in a while, you might need to review your current coverage. Check to see how much you currently carry and decide if you need to have higher limits or a different type of insurance coverage.
