We are always telling children to beware of strangers because the fact is that there are people that may intend to harm them in this world. We need to listen to our own advice and ensure that we are cautious around strangers as well. This advice is especially important for our elderly community as they are frequently targeted by individuals looking for any easy target.
I was sent an article by a fellow employee detailing incidents that were occurring in their local area. This could occur in any area and any time of year, so please review, share with your friends and family members to ensure that everyone stays safe in their home.
From a local police authority:
Multiple times over the last month there have been instances of several gentlemen, acting as tree trimmers, approaching homes and asking the residents to come outside. The men say that the neighbor has hired them to trim the trees and that they need to review the property line and associated tree growth with them. They then ask the resident to walk to the backyard with them to look at the property line. As they are in the backyard, accomplices are able to get into the home and get away with money, valuables, etc.
This same type of incident could occur with individuals acting as any kind of service company. Discuss with your family the importance of 1) never letting anyone unexpected into your home, 2) asking for credentials, a badge or the phone number of the home office to verify the identity of the individuals at the door, 3) questioning any individual that comes to your home. Just asking questions and being cautious could be enough to scare would-be burglars away.
